While escaping from the Hellfire Club, Jean Grey gives into the dark side of her soul awakened by Mastermind, becoming the Dark Phoenix. Shaw recommends to Senator Kelly using his government connections to restart the Sentinel program so that they can hunt down dangerous mutants as part of his secret scheme to vilify and destroy the X-Men. In space, Dark Phoenix loops around the sun and uses its gravity to slingshot her out of the solar system and towards a warp gate not far beyond it, which sends her to the Shi’ar empire. She then needs to recharge, and feasts on the D’Bari system’s star, causing it to go nova and obliterate all the living creatures on the planet orbiting it.
